SUMMARY:  Under the direct supervision of the Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor, supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in receiving, distributing, and loading materials. Oversees and supervises all yard activities including inventory levels, unloading of raw materials and their respective storage, transport of raw materials to production, placement of finished products, loading of finished products for shipping and delivery, marking/labeling of materials,  maintaining yard organization and housekeeping of all non-production areas of the yard.  Develops a proper attitude toward safety, utilizes manpower and equipment properly. Able to relate to employees and their problems, and handles complaints and questions promptly, consistently, and fairly.

 POSITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: [Please Note… Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of management.]

  • Reviews job orders provided by the Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor for lumber grades, dimensions, lengths, and species, and other materials.  Estimates worker hour requirements for completion of pulling and loading schedule. 
  • Coordinates pulling and loading of materials based on schedules provided. 
  • Coordinates and assures prompt unloading of all incoming trucks and assures deliveries are processed correctly then properly identified and stacked in the appropriate area.
  • Assures a quality control check is done on incoming lumber before it is unloaded from the truck.  
  • Maintains inventory, organization, and appropriate storage of all checked-in material deliveries. 
  • Monitors material handling techniques including the use of proper handling techniques to avoid material damage; observing capacity limits and speed limits of delivery trucks and forklifts; and correct load balancing on forklifts and delivery trucks. 
  • Continually integrates new materials orders into pulling schedules and adjusts crewing and loading to meet committed delivery dates.
  • Ensures outgoing loads are complete and properly stacked, marked, banded, and positioned in the designated staging area for pick-up.
  • Assures the proper, accurate, and safe loading of shipments and any required documentation, including photographs, is completed as required. 
  • Maintains yard in a clean, orderly, organized, and safe condition. 
  • Reports low, out of stock, damaged, and surplus material to Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor and/or Plant Manager, including discrepancies between delivery tickets and the actual material, received. 
  • Confers with Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor to coordinate activities, staffing needs, and job priorities.  Coordinates any need for overtime with Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor.
  • Performs reviews and provides job performance improvement recommendations, quality training, and assures standards compliance for the work crew. 
  • Assures machinery and equipment (forklifts) malfunctions are reported in a timely manner to Maintenance and Pre-Shift Operational Checklists are completed. 
  • Inventories, and inspects materials.
  • Inventories, requisitions and maintains supplies and tools for yard operations. 
  • Recommends to the Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor changes in working conditions, techniques, process, and use of equipment to control and/or improve productivity, costs, equipment performance, and quality of the product. 
  • Analyzes and resolves productivity problems, or assist workers in solving work problems. 
  • Ensures that employee conduct and safety guidelines are followed and applied in a consistent manner to all employees. 
  • Performs activities of workers supervised which includes being certified as a Lift Operator in accordance with company and OSHA standards. 
  • Complies with all employee conduct and safety guidelines and reports any and all accidents to the Scheduling and Shipping Supervisor and Plant Manager. 
  • Serves on the plant safety committee. Assists in the investigation of accidents and injuries.

  • Ability to learn & grow – i.e. learn & apply TMS, learn kaizen, gain CPR certification as well as for Forklift certification.
  • Ability to lift &/or move up to 50 pounds
  • Able to perform assembly tasks as required 
  • Basic Math skills needed  

DIRECT REPORTS

Manages 5 to 8 employees in the materials/lumber yard.  Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the department.  Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; giving primary input on employee performance appraisals; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE           

One (1) year certificate from college or technical school; or three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as shipping and receiving data, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. 
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees of the organization. Must be able to communicate effectively with all employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages, board footage, and square footage.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Driver’s license, certified as a forklift operator in accordance with company and OSHA standards. Successful completion of the company-sponsored First Aid and CPR course.
